CONCRETE MIX

Image
BASIC MIX The physical properties of density and strength of concrete are determined, in part, by the proportions of the three key ingredients, water, cement, and aggregate. You have your choice of proportioning ingredients by volume or by weight. Proportioning by volume is less accurate, however due to the time constraints of a class time period this may be the preferred method. A basic mixture of mortar can be made using the volume proportions of 1 water : 2 cement : 3 sand. Most of the student activities can be conducted using this basic mixture. Another "old rule of thumb" for mixing concrete is 1 cement : 2 sand : 3 gravel by volume . Mix the dry ingredients and slowly add water until the concrete is workable. This mixture may need to be modified depending on the aggregate used to provide a concrete of the right workability. The mix should not be too stiff or too sloppy. It is difficult to form good test specimens if it is too stiff. If it is too sloppy, water ...

TEST ON CEMENT

Image
FOR WHAT TESTING OF CEMENT IS NEEDED Quality tests on cements at construction site (also called field tests on cement) are carried to know the quality of cement supplied at site. It gives some idea about cement quality based on colour, touch and feel and other tests. TYPES OF TESTS CONDUCTED  Tests on Cement at Construction site The following are the quality tests on cement at construction site: Color test Presence of lumps Adulteration test Temperature test Float tests Strength test Setting test Date of packing Brief explanation of above tests are discussed below: Color Test of Cement The color of the cement should be uniform. It should be grey colour with a light greenish shade. Presence of Lumps The cement should be free from any hard lumps. Such lumps are formed by the absorption of moisture from the atmosphere. Any bag of cement containing such lumps should be rejected. Cement Adulteration Test The cement sh...

COVER TO REINFORCEMENT

Image
COVER TO REINFORCEMENT Concrete  cover, in reinforced  concrete, is the least distance between the surface of embedded  reinforcement  and the outer surface of the concrete (ACI 130). The concrete  cover  depth can be measured with a  cover  meter.                                                                                                                                                                                       PURPOSE OF REINFORCEMENT Minimu...

POISSON'S RATIO

Image
POISSON'S RATIO THE PICTURES WILL MAKE YOU UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT EASILY where,          1.ELASTIC MODULUS : Young's  modulus  ( E ) describes tensile  elasticity , or the tendency of an object to deform along an axis when opposing forces are applied along that axis; it is defined as the ratio of tensile stress to tensile strain. It is often referred to simply as the  elastic modulus .          2.POISSON'S RATIO : T he ratio of the proportional decrease in a lateral measurement to the proportional increase in length in a sample of material that is elastically stretched. LET US WATCH THE  VIDEO WITH A CLEAR EXPLANATION
